School start-up

Students not previously registered are asked to register online as soon as possible.  The start-up process takes some time and classes may not be finalized until several days after the start of the term.  Schools appreciate parents’ and students’ understanding and cooperation.

Programs to note

French Immersion is available at the following schools:

If your child has First Nations, Inuit or Métis ancestry, please ensure you indicate this when registering for school. The Ministry of Education provides additional funding for school districts to support district-wide Aboriginal Education.  Call 250.741.5318 for more information.

Parents of new students in need of special help or English as a Second Language students should register online.

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools accepts fee-paying international students.  Call 250.751.0197 for more information.

Parents of preschool-aged children are encouraged to attend StrongStart Early Learning Centres.

 

School starts in Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools for Grades 1 to 12 on Tuesday, September 5 at 11 a.m. with dismissal set at 12 noon.

Information for Students and Parents

Exceptions are noted below

  • Kindergarten students start school gradually in small groups and for shorter days.  Full-day Kindergarten begins Wednesday, September 13.  Contact your school for gradual entry schedule.
  • Cedar Secondary – 10:30 a.m. start for Grades 9 – 12 with dismissal at 11:30 a.m.; 1 p.m. start for Grade 8 with dismissal at 3:20 p.m.
  • Mountain View Elementary – 10:45 a.m. start with dismissal at 11:45 a.m.
  • Randerson Ridge Elementary – 10:30 a.m. start with dismissal at 11:30 a.m.
  • Dover Bay Secondary – 10:30 a.m. start for Grades 9 – 12 with dismissal at 11:30 a.m.; 12 noon start for Grade 8 with 2:30 p.m. dismissal.
  • John Barsby Community Secondary – 10:15 a.m. start for Grades 9 – 12 with dismissal at 11:45 a.m.; 12 noon start for Grade 8 with dismissal at 3 p.m. (transportation provided for Grade 8 bus students)
  • Ladysmith Secondary – 11 a.m. start for Grades 8 – 12; Grades 9 – 11 dismiss at 12 noon; dismissal for Grade 8 at 2 p.m. (new students in Grades 9 – 12 are invited to an introduction and tour at 10 a.m.)
  • Nanaimo District Secondary – 9:45 a.m. start for Grades 9 – 12 with dismissal at 10:45 a.m.; 12:30 p.m. start for Grade 8 with dismissal at 1:50 p.m.
  • Wellington Secondary – 10 a.m. start for Grades 9 – 12 with dismissal at 11 a.m.; 12 noon start for Grade 8 with dismissal at 2:30 p.m.

Opening day bus schedules

On Tuesday, September 5, bus runs begin two hours later than the regular morning schedule for elementary students.  Inquiries about secondary busing, please contact the Transportation Department at 250 741-5214.  Return runs begin at 12 noon.

Exceptions to this schedule

  • Mountain View Elementary – return bus runs begin at 11:45 a.m.
  • Dover Bay Secondary – Grade 8 bus runs will commence at 11:30 a.m. with return runs at 2:30 p.m. Grades 9 – 12 return runs will commence at 12 noon.
  • Nanaimo District Secondary – Grades 9 – 12 return bus runs begin at 11 a.m.; Grade 8 return bus runs begin at 2 p.m.

Who Receives School Bus Service?

Bus transportation is provided for students who live outside the walk limit boundaries. Walk limits for the provision of school bus transportation are:

  • Students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 living beyond 4 km (2.5 miles) from school will be eligible for transportation.
  • Grades 4-12 pupils living beyond 4.8 km (3 miles) from school will be eligible for transportation.
  • All Grades 1-12 pupils may be required to walk up to 3.2 km (2 miles) to the nearest bus stop.

The district also provides school bus service for students with special needs.
