Board policies and procedures

Board of Education policies and procedures are available here.

Setting policy for the operation of schools and the school district is an important role of the Board of Education.  Through policy, the Board establishes goals and gives direction to the local school system.

Policies set out a course of action to guide future decisions by those who work in the school system.  Procedures, which accompany policies, outlines more specifically what district staff are expected to do. All policies and procedures are adopted or amended at public meetings of the Board of Education.

About notices of motion

When the Board is considering a new policy, or making revisions to an existing policy, it sends out a notice of motion, to allow parents, students, staff and the public to comment on the proposal.

Current notices of motion are available here.

Comments on the proposed policies must be sent, by the deadline specified, to the Board's Secretary, 395 Wakesiah Avenue, Nanaimo B.C. V9R 3K6 or fax 250 741-5309.

WHAT ARE TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITIES?

Boards of education are elected to improve student achievement. They do it by engaging their communities in building and maintaining a school system that reflects local priorities, values and expectations. School trustees listen to their communities, guide the work of their school district, setting a plan, policy and the annual budget – and report back to the public on how our students are doing.
