Elections and by-elections are conducted according to the rules and regulations set out in the Local Government Act which governs local government elections throughout British Columbia.

Beginning in 2014, general local government elections in British Columbia will be held every four years, including the elections for the offices of School District Trustee on the Board of Education.  For information on all aspects of voting or running for office in local government elections, please visit “Preparing for the Role of School Trustee” section on our website and/or visit the following websites:

Running for School Trustee

To be eligible as a candidate in a local government election, at the time of nomination, you must:

  1. Be a Canadian citizen; AND
  2. Be, or will be, 18 years of age or older on or before general voting day (October 20, 2018); AND
  3. Have lived in BC for at least six months (March 13, 2018, is the last day to meet six month residency requirement for candidates); AND
  4. Have not been disqualified by any law or statute from being nominated, elected or holding office.

There is no requirement for a candidate to be a resident or own property in the electoral area.

Nomination Package

Those interested in running as a School Trustee candidate in the 2018 General Local Election can download a School Trustee Nomination Package.  If you wish to pick up a nomination package, you can do so starting Monday, August 20, 2018, at 8:00 am, at the District Administration Centre, 395 Wakesiah Avenue, Nanaimo.  Packages will be available for pick up and online until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 14, 2018.

Filing Nomination Papers

The period to file nomination documents is from 9:00 am on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 14, 2018.  Nomination papers must be filed with the Deputy Chief Election Officer, Karen Matthews, at the District Administration Centre during regular office hours (8:00 am – 4:00 pm).   Appointments are strongly recommended, please call 250-741-5231 to book an appointment.

Nomination documents may be delivered by hand, mail, fax* or other delivery service.
*Originals of faxed nomination documents must be received by the Chief Election Officer by 4:00 pm on Friday, September 21, 2018, or the nomination is deemed to be withdrawn.

The district held an information evening on the Roles and Responsibilities of Trustees on Monday, September 10 at 6 p.m. in the Boardroom at 395 Wakesiah Avenue.
