Page 12 “ “ Guatemala By Sara Drew, NLPS Student This summer I had an amazing opportunity to teach English in a village just outside of Antigua, Guatemala. During these two weeks I put away my first world western standards and lived like all the locals. I arrived not knowing what to expect and only having very basic Spanish. (si, no, por favour & donde esta el bano) I left with many things; a deeper understanding of the world around me, lifelong friends and memories, as well as a newfound love for helados, frijoles and tortillas. People there may not have many possessions but everyone has an endless amount to give. Hope Stewart and I were welcomed into the home of Dona Hilda and Daniel. Even with the large language barrier we were still able to converse through our actions and tone of voice. I could not be any more thankful to this family, my second family. Although we were there to teach we did plenty of learning. Most of the learning moments happened outside the classroom. For instance, we thought village children would love to have a full set of baseball equipment (big thank you to NLPS for donating a tremendous amount of bats, helmets, gloves and balls) Soon enough we found out that although they really did appreciate everything we gave them, their needs were much more basic. For example, a girl I worked with was sleeping on a flea ridden mattress lying on a dirt floor. We could have supplied clean bed sheets, blankets and modern flea treatments to rid them all from her house. My eyes were opened up to a new, beautiful culture and language. “ “
