Page 13 Another lesson occurred when we were tasked with building a garden for two lovely families. At first we thought “what could be stopping a family from growing and harvesting their own food?” Back home it costs such a little amount of time and money to grow basic vegetables. We discovered that what held these families back from planting a garden was the lack of funds to buy a shovel and seeds. We quickly located a local hardware shop to buy supplies and started constructing and planting! We left each family with a shovel and a supply of seeds and we left with a new appreciation of how difficult it is to improve your circumstances when you are poor. Hopefully, they are enjoying fresh vegetables now and in the future. I learned many, many things from this trip. My eyes were opened up to a new beautiful culture and language. Before having this experience I had no idea what I wanted to do after graduating from school. I had floated around the idea of photojournalism but I wasn’t 100% sure. Now, after seeing the village kids eyes light up every morningoutofpureexcitementtobeatschooland to be learning from us I started to feel like I had a direction. Teaching these kids really made me feel like it was something I wanted to carry on for the long run. Now, I plan to get an education degree specializing in english as a second language. Perhaps one day I will return to Guatemala as a real teacher and continue to learn from them. 
