Page 6 Georgia Avenue Teacher Mark Fawdry has had the chance to teach music in multiple schools as well as in another district. He has noticed that students are most engaged in music class when they are actively involved in creating music themselves. Mark says, “I approach all lessons as a musical experience, giving students the time to play and explore with their voices and instruments. Students from Grades 3 to 5, begin learning instruments that they will have the opportunity to play in a modern program that happens in Grades 6 and 7.” The students learn skills on the guitar, ukulele, keyboards, drums, vocals and bass to make an informed choice about what they would like to play in the modern band program. The modern band program takes songs the students already know and love, and gives them the chords they need to know to play it successfully. The modern band program celebrates all genres of music, and gives students a sense of community when they play music as a group. 
