Page 3 Blogging as a means of maintaining a digital portfolio is a staple feature in the Gr. 7 class Katie Lonsdale and I share so I would like to share what platform I rely on, how I approach it in our class as well as some tips that I have discovered through experience. What Platform? The blogging site that I have our students use is called Edublogs. The main reasons for choosing Edublogs is that it is free, does not require the students to give any information about themselves and is intuitive. There are some other reasons I choose Edublogs which I will explain about. Edublogs is in fact a student version of Wordpress. Many businesses and organizations these days rely upon websites hosted by Wordpress (even SD68!). It is my belief that by having the students familiar with the Dashboard of their Edublog, they will be able to transfer this understanding later should they ever have to maintain (or have their own) Wordpress site. Another reason I choose Edublogs is because they look fantastic. Being an extension of Wordpress, students can choose from about 100 different “themes” for their blog. All of the themes look stylish and professional. Having a good-looking blog is always a motivating factor for the students. An Edublog is easy to start. Just go to www.edublogs.org and follow the simple steps of creating a blog. Here is a Youtube vid on it.
