Community comes together for reflection on the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

To bring truth and reconciliation to the forefront, not just on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, but everyday.

More than 3,000 people showed up to hear stories and share moments.

There were Elders and Knowledge Keepers, dignitaries, children, families, media and the community at large.

You could hear a pin drop during the speeches.  And of course, our local Elder Lolly Good, whose Hul’q’umi’num name is Shxuysulwut, started the day in a good way with a blessing and song. Dancing and singing ended out the formal part of the event, leaving way for families and community members to check out the many resources and sporting opportunities available.

“We’re gathered on the day for Truth & Reconciliation to honour the children and also a Snuneymuxw way of being. The Snuneymuxw people have cared for these lands since time immemorial and their connection to all living things (land, water, spirit, animals and one another) is at the core of who they are. The time has come for the rest of society to see this and honour this way of life that for so long was dehumanized by residential schools, government-run hospitals and government policies like the 60s scoop that affected so many people and families.”
