Page 3 In her role, Angela helps students develop their language skills. “In my room, there are refugees, immigrants, and international students. Some students come to us with zero English, while others are able to communicate simply. Through conversations, games and structured lessons, I strive to help the students navigate their new world, both inside and outside the school walls. We work on anything from basic ‘outside world’ vocabulary, to vocabulary specific to a discipline.” We are fortunate to have Angela provide meaningful, creative instruction to make language learning fun for our students. Honouring cultural identity is an important part of the process. This class, as well as many others at NDSS are supported by Candice Werner, a Secondary ELL specialist. Candice works with immigrant students to help develop language skills and to also help with the sometimes difficult adjustment to life in Canadian schools. The full time ELL position is new for NDSS and Candice hit the ground running in September! She is a positive advocate for our ELLs and an essential support for our teachers at NDSS. Moyasser (Moy) Mahmoud, the district’s Arabic Speaking Cultural Support Teacher, visited the class to share in the food and check in with our Arabic speaking students. Moy brings his valuable cultural knowledge and language ability to the district and is an integral part of our ELL team.
