Students compete and win at Fashion Technology competition

On February 22, 2024, Dover Bay Secondary School hosted the Fashion Technology competition at the regional level for Skills Canada. Skills Canada is a national organization that promotes various career opportunities for youth in the fields of trades and technologies. The Central Vancouver Island Fashion Technology competition was open to secondary students from Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Powell River. A total of twelve students, ranging from Grade 9 to 12, represented Wellington Secondary, NDSS, Ladysmith Secondary and Dover Bay Secondary.

The students competed to sew a Moto style jacket with an asymmetrical zipper, collar and set in sleeves from denim fabric. The competitors prepared a fashion illustration and technical drawing of their proposed jacket design. The students had seven hours to construct the jacket completely while adhering to their fashion design and specific criteria. Textiles and Fashion Technology gives students the opportunity to explore creative design, critical thinking, pattern making, and sewing construction techniques in the field of garment manufacturing.

Congratulations to Eden Vanderkwaak (NDSS – Gr.11) – Gold; Hala Kishawi (NDSS – Gr.12) – Silver; and Dongeun Min (Wellington – Gr. 10) – Bronze.
